26. My camera produces Quick Time .mov video files.
How can I play those movies with Digital Photos Slide Show?
27. Why do I see your images displayed at the end
of my slide show?
1. How do I
create a slide show that I can send to a friend or family member?
There are two ways you can share photos with others using Digital
Photo Slide Show. The first way is to create a single file SETUP.EXE
file that you can e-mail or send on CD-ROM. The recipient can install
your slide show on his or her PC simply by running SETUP.EXE just
as they would install any program on their PC. See paragraph
4 for additional instructions.
The second way to share photos is to create an autorun CD-ROM that
displays your slide show automatically when the CD-ROM is inserted
in the recipient's CD drive. Creating an autorun CD-ROM is a simple
step by step process. See paragraph 5 of
for additional instructions.
2. How can I save
the locations of my Desktop Icons so that I can better view the
Wallpaper Slide Show?
for a great tip on this subject.
3. The Wallpaper
Slide Show program is not working correctly. What can I do?
Make sure you have your active desktop turned off. To do this,
right click on the desktop and select properties. Next click on
the Web tab at the top of the Desktop Properties window. Finally,
uncheck the box that says "Show web content on my active desktop"
and click OK to exit.
4. How do I create
a SETUP.EXE program that I can send to friends and family that will
install both my screen saver and slide show?
Creating a single file SETUP.EXE slide show is a simple 4 step
process.
Start
the Installation Producer program by clicking the icon (displayed
to the right) on your Desktop or click Start, Programs, Slide
Show, Installation Producer;
- Installation Producer is in a "Wizard" format. Simply
answer all the questions to create your slide show. Click the
"Next" button after completing each step. When you are
finished, click the "Finish" button.
- When the creation process is completed, you will see a message
telling you the location where the file is located.
- Use your e-mail program to send SETUP.EXE to a friend or use
your CD burning software to copy SETUP.EXE to a CD-ROM.
5. How do I create
a CD-ROM with my photos that starts automatically?
Use the Autorun Producer utility to create an autorun CD-ROM that
displays your slide show automatically when the CD-ROM is inserted
in the recipient's CD drive. This utility creates the four files
necessary for your slide show to start automatically when the CD-ROM
is inserted into the end-user's CD-ROM drive.
Creating an autorun CD-ROM is a simple process.
Start
the Autorun Producer program to create the four files that will
be copied to your CD burner..
- Complete all the fields required by the Autorun Producer. Click
here to see an example screen
shot of the Autorun Producer program.
- Select the default transitions for your slide show. Simply click
the transitions button and place a check mark by each transition
you want to use during the slide show. Note, this cannot be changed
once the CD-ROM is created.
Click
the Create button to create the following files: AUTORUN.INF,
DSS.INI, DSSAR.ICO, DSSAR.EXE. A message will be displayed telling
you where the files are located.
- Use your CD burning software to copy these four files to the
root of your CD-ROM. Burn the CD as a data CD. Make sure you place
them in the root folder of the CD-ROM. Root of the CD means
do not put these file in a folder. All sub-folders and
these four files should be stored on the root of the CD-ROM.
For example, if the CD -ROM drive is F:, put these four files
(AUTORUN.INF, DSS.INI, DSSAR.ICO, DSSAR.EXE) on F:\ as shown in
the image to the right.
- Finally, user your CD burning software (data CD format) to copy
your photo images and music files to the CD-ROM. These images
can be placed in the root folder or in any number of sub-folders.
- If you want to add captions to your autorun CD additional steps
are necessary. Captions and other photo properties (such as individual
transitions and transition timing) are stored in files with the
same name as the image but with .dss as the file extension. Thus,
a photo named PHOTO29.JPG would have its caption stored in PHOTO29.DSS.
Make sure to copy all of the .dss files with your images to your
CD-ROM if you want the captions to be displayed on your CD-ROM.
You must create captions before your CD is burned. Use
the slide show program to create your captions using the photo
properties button. When complete, copy all the .dss files to your
CD with your images. To learn more about createing captions, click
here.
Now when the recipient of your CD-ROM inserts it into their CD
Drive, your slide show will start automatically
6. If I create a
CD-ROM slide show with my photos and send it to my friends and family,
will the shareware notice be displayed when they try to view the
slide show?
If you use the Autorun Producer utility to create your slide show,
no shareware notice will be displayed when your friends and family
run the slide show, even if they are not registered users of Digital
Photo Slide Show.
7. How do I add music
to my slide show.
Adding
music to your slide show is simple. Simply add music files (.mp3,
.wav, .mid or .wma) to the folders where your images are located.
Select Play Music from the configuration menu and follow the
steps outlined in paragraph
#1 of this FAQ to create your slide show. The music will
play automatically if you configure the slide show to play music.
To configure the slide show program to play music, click the
Play Music option from the configuration window. See an example
of the configuration window to the left.
Music files are played in alphabetical order which includes the
full path to the file name. For example: d:\AugustPhotos\Z.mp3
will play before d:\SeptemberPhotos\A.mp3. The mp3 files
will play one after another. When the last mp3 has played, the whole
sequence will be restarted with the first mp3.
To display the Configuration Window, right-click anywhere on the
main screen and select configure or click the configuration icon.
Slide Show supports the following music formats: .mp3, .wma, .wav
and .mid. It should be noted that Windows Media Player may refuse
to play a .wma file on another PC if the License for that music
is not transferred to that PC. There are no such license checks
for .mp3 or .wav files. Therefore, .mp3, .mid and .wav files
are preferred over .wma files.
8. My photos display
slowly on some computers. What can I do?
Try using Digital Photo Resizer to resize your images to something
close to your screen resolution. This makes the images display faster
because the software does not have to resize the image each time
it is displayed. For example, if you have a 3.1 mega pixel image
it will be approximately 7 times larger than a typical 800x600 screen
resolution. Use Digital Photo Resizer to optimize your photos for
800x600 and they will display much more quickly on all computer
systems.
9.
How do I create a CD-ROM that automatically plays my photos but
also gives the user a choice of which folder of photos on the CD
to display.
Start
the Autorun Producer. Select the icon for your CD-ROM from the list
by clicking on it. Click on the check box that is labeled "Show
Menu Directory". Select any other options you desire by clicking
on the appropriate check box. Click the "Create" button.
The three files necessary for your CD are placed in the Autorun
folder where Digital Photo Slide Show was installed. Use your CD
Burner software (data CD format) to copy those files to the root
of your new CD. Copy your images to sub-folders on the CD with names
that describes the photos. When the CD-ROM starts the user will
see a menu that lists the folders on the CD-ROM. He simply clicks
on a folder, clicks OK and the photos in the selected folder will
be displayed as a slide show.
10. How
do I remove the Wallpaper Slide Show?
The
Wallpaper Slide Show installed with the program, changes your desktop
wallpaper at a specified interval. When the software is installed,
it displays the images distributed with the software. To display
your own images, double click on the Wallpaper Slide Show icon in
the lower left hand corner of your task bar. Click the folder icon
to the right of the text box labeled "Picture Folder Path"
and select the folder where the images reside that you want displayed
as wallpaper on your desktop.
To prevent the Wallpaper Slide Show from starting automatically
every time you restart your computer, uncheck the check box labeled
"Start with Windows" and click the "Exit" button.
To remove the Wallpaper Slide Show program from your system, double
click on the Wallpaper icon in the lower right hand corner of the
task bar. Uncheck the check box labeled "Start with Windows"
and click the "Exit" button. Then uninstall as usual.
If the software has already been uninstalled, use Windows Explorer
to delete "\Program Files\SlideShow\wpchng.exe".
Restore your original wallpaper by right clicking anywhere on your
desktop and select properties. Next select the background tab at
the top of the window and select the desired wallpaper. Finish by
clicking OK.
11. How can I save the
organization of my icons on my desktop so that I can always see
the desktop wall paper.
for additional information about layout.dll which can be used to
save your icon layout. Please report dead links to Jim
Voelker
12. What is that
sound I hear periodically that sounds like a camera shutter and
how do I stop it?
The
camera sound you hear occurs whenever the Wallpaper Slide Show changes
your desktop wallpaper. You can configure this program so that your
digital photos are displayed on your desktop at specific intervals.
It is a nice way to display your photos. I set mine so the wallpaper
is changed every 30 minutes or so. If you don't want to use Wallpaper
slide show, double click on the program icon in the lower right
hand corner of the task bar to display the configuration window.
Click "Exit" to terminate the program. To prevent the
Wallpaper Slide Show from starting automatically every time you
restart your computer, uncheck the check box labeled "Start
with Windows" and click the "Exit" button.
13. Is it possible to create
an autorun side show with music on a CD, and also on the same CD
put more photos that they can view separately? I do not want these
extra photos to be shown in the autorun side show.
Simply put the files you do not want included in the slide show
in a folder named "Originals" (i.e. d:\Originals). This
folder is ignored by Digital Photo Slide Show. It allows you to
use resized images for your slide show and put the original size
photos in a separate folder in case the recipient wants to print
a full size image.
14. How do I control
the default transitions that are used to display my photos?
If you want your slide show to display only a few of the numerous
transitions, you need to change the default transitions. To change
the default transitions for a the current slide show, click the
transitions button
if the controls are showing, or right-click and select the same
icon from the pop-up menu. At that point, place a check next to
the transitions you want to use and then click OK. It is that simple.
15. How do I add captions
to my slide show?
Captions
and other photo properties must added to photos before you create
your CD-ROM with Autorun Producer or SETUP.EXE with Installation
Producer.
To add a caption to a photo, first pause the slide show and then
click the photo property button ,
if the controls are showing, or right-click and select the same
icon from the pop-up menu. From there you can edit the properties
of each photo including the caption. See the photo property window
to the right of this paragraph. Type the caption in the space indicated,
select the background and font colors, specify whether you want
the caption to have a border, select the translucency (zero is solid
and 200 is clear), select the transition of the caption and the
transition speed in milliseconds (600 is recommended).
Captions and other photo properties are stored in files with the
same name as the image but with .dss as the file extension. Thus
a photo named PHOTO1.JPG would have its caption stored in PHOTO1.DSS.
Make sure to copy all of the .dss files to your CD-ROM if you want
the captions to be displayed on your CD-ROM.
16. How do I
control how long a specific photo is displayed?
To specify how long a particular image will be displayed, first
pause the slide show and then click the photo property button ,
if the controls are showing, or right-click and select the same
icon from the pop-up menu. From there you can edit the properties
of each photo including the duration each photo is displayed. As
shown in the Photo Properties window in this example, the duration
of the photo is set in milliseconds. In this example, the photo
will be displayed 5000 milliseconds which is 5 seconds.
17. How do
I choose a specific transition for a specific photo?
To specify how long a particular transition for an individual photo,
first pause the slide show and then click the photo property button
,
if the controls are showing, or right-click and select the same
icon from the pop-up menu. From there you can edit the properties
of each photo including the transition of each photo. Simply select
the desired transition from the drop down list. In the example Photo
Properties window the "Wipe Right" transition is selected
and uses a 600 millisecond transition.
18. How do I access
the controls?
If
you right-click anywhere during the slide show, a pop-up menu is
displayed. It controls or provides access to all the features of
Digital Photo Slide Show. Simply move the mouse cursor to the desired
menu item an click. As shown on the pop-up menu several hot-keys
can also be used. The up-arrow key is equivalent to pressing the
"Play" button. The down-arrow key pauses the slide show.
The right-arrow key moves the slide show forward one slide and the
left-arrow key moves the slide show back one slide. The other hot-keys
are described on the pop-up menu displayed to the left.
To display the controls with the keyboard, simply press the F2
key as indicated on the pop-up menu.
19. How do set the order
of slides?
Slides are ordered randomly or alphabetically. Alphabetical sorting
includes the entire path so that c:\zzz\apple.jpg will play
AFTER c:\aaa\zebra.jpg.
If you are ordering slides numerically, use multiple zeros in front
of the number i.e. 001.jpg, 002.jpg, 003..jpg etc.
20. I have done everything
and cannot hear the background music I added to my slide show. Please
help.
If you are having problems hearing music with your slide show please
do the following:
- Make sure your .mp3 files are in the same folder as the images
being played.
- Make sure you have "Play Music" checked in the configuration
window.
- Make sure your system sound is on (not muted) and the volume
is up.
- If all the above is true and you still cannot hear music, please
run the Microsoft DirectX diagnostic tool named dxdiag.exe. DirectX
has an impact on how Windows Media Player plays sounds. There
is more information about it at: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q190900
Alternatively, try installing the most recent verions of Windows
Media Player and DirectX.
21. How do I make the slide
show end after all the slides are shown?
Starting with version 2002.7, you simply select the option "Pause
at The End" from either the Configuration Window or Autorun
Producer. It is no longer necessary to use a separate file named
"The End.jpg". This functions works even if the photos
are being displayed in Random Mode.
22. I would like to distribute
my graphics etc. via an autorun CD in the form of a webpage with
clickable thumbnails.
Try using Web Slide Show which allows you to create html thumbnail
pages that link to the full size images.
Create a file named autorun.inf with notepad that contains the
following text:
[autorun]
open=index.htm
Copy autorun.inf and the .htm files created with Web Slide Show
to the root of the CD and copy the images and thumbnails folders
to the CD in their entirety. This will create the desired autorun
thumbnail view of your images.
23. The music plays on the
Autorun CD I created but it sounds garbled and skips. What is the
problem
First, try resizing all of your images to a resolution close to
that of your monitor. For example, if your monotor is displaying
photos at 800 by 600 then resize the photos to that resolution so
the software does not have to spend processing time resizing the
photos when the slide show plays.
You might also have a problem with your CD-ROM drive. Mp3 files
can be played on most CD-ROM drives, however, if the drive is not
set in DMA mode (Direct Memory Access) the quality of the playback
may be garbled or the music may cut in and out. Please read the
following FAQ on Microsoft's web site for additional information
about how to change your CD-ROM configuration to DMA mode. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q260229
You may also need a firmware update from the CD-ROM manufacturer.
24. How can I display my
slide show on a TV?
GrandTec Ultimate 2000 PC To TV Converter
The Ultimate 2000 is a pocketsize PC-to-TV converter recommended
for professional presentations, computer gaming, and internet browsing
on TV. It is perfect for displaying your Slide Shows on a PC for
family and friends. Click the link above to find out more.
25. How do I copy my Web
Slide Show to my Web Server?
After you prepare a Web Slide Show, you can view it on your PC
immediately simply by clicking on index.htm. If you want to place
the web slide show on a web server, you need to copy the files to
the web server with an FTP program or with whatever utility the
web server supports. Copy all the files created with Web Slide Show
including all the .htm files, subfolders and images. A good free
FTP program is WS-FTP
LE.
26. My camera produces Quick
Time .mov video files. How can I play those movies with Digital
Photos Slide Show?
Digital Photo Slide Show does not support Quick Time files with
a .mov file extension. However, you can convert .mov file to a .avi
or .mpeg file, both of which are supported by Digital Photo Slide
Show. Click here
to learn how to convert your .mov Quick Time file.
27. Why do I see
your images displayed at the end of my slide show?
Digital Photo Slide Show displays all the images in the folder
you choose to display and all the images in any sub-folders. You
must be putting your images in c:\program files\slide show and then
displaying that folder. When all your images are displayed in c:\program
files\slide show, the software then displays all the images in c:\program
files\slide show\images, a sub-folder where the images that come
with the software are stored. To avoid this, put the images you
want to display in a unique folder with no sub-folders (i.e. c:\my
photos\slideshow).
